Team LA: Day 5 and Day 6
Day 5
Today we went to tour Kaiser Permanente Teen Clinic, and Health Education Center. We received information about healthy living, nutrition, and health curriculum offered for pediatric patients, teens, and adults. We spoke with a diversity counselor about how services are offered to doctors to ethically, and culturally interact/serve a diverse group of patients. We also talked with a teen health educator that shared the differences between adolescent medicine and adult medicine. We talked with health education supervisor about "how" health education services are offered to students at local elementary schools.
After we volunteered at Reading Partners. We had the opportunity to reach out to three different elementary schools and help students during their after school reading program. We read with students in the third, fourth, and fifth grade. The schools that we volunteered were all title I schools.
After we had our family dinner. It was so much FUN! we had the chance to meet everyones friends and family. We then had our reflection with our friends and families and shared our Spring Break Experience.
Day 6
It was a long drive back to Eugene but we made it! Team LA impacted more than 500+ youth. We toured amazing organizations, and had an outstanding experiential learning journey. Our team started as a group of motivated individuals of diverse backgrounds and by the end of the week became a close knit of friends!

Team LosAngeles:Day 3 and 4
Day 3:
We volunteered at the LA Foodbank! At this site we helped pack boxes of snacks, cereal, canned food, and beverages. The boxes that we packed were then shipped off to different non-profit organizations, schools, and elderly centers within the Los Angeles Community. Participants worked on several tasks like throwing separating valid food from cans that were bent, dented, or opened. Team LA helped pack over 50 boxes of food at LA Foodbank.
Later in the day we had the opportunity to tour the Los Angeles Covenant House. During our tour we learned about the programs, and facilities offered to homeless, and run away youth. We had the opportunity to walk through the education department, studio/film making department, kitchen, counseling department, and client work room. We learned about the services and programs that were offered to the clients. The Los Angeles Covenant house has 94 available spots open for the youth.
After, we went back to the Los Angeles Red Shield Salvation Army. Some participants had the opportunity to help prepare Easter baskets filled with taffy, books, and lollipops for the youth. Other participants played basketball, or made friendship bracelets with the students.
Day 4:
Today we toured Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall. we received a tour from Officer Nterrante that works at the facility. During our tour we were able to learn about youth that are transferred from different juvenile halls, youth that are housed within the different barracks, and the level of security between different compounds. The team was able to stand inside a room within the barrack, and walk through multiple compounds within the facility. We learned about the intake process, and we also learned about the demographics of most youth that are currently booked at this juvenile facility.
We also returned back to Heart of Los Angeles to help the middle school students with math and reading. Participants helped middle school students with math subjects like geometry and algebra. Reading took place in the library, where participants and students took turns reading pages of chapter books. We were so excited to help the students with their homework, especially because we helped them catch up with assigned school work for Spring Break!

Day 1: Los Angeles Youth Empowerment!
After a long drive from Eugene, Oregon Team Los Angeles finally made it to California. On Sunday our group took a cultural tour around Los Angeles, and familiarized ourselves with the school district, and Los Angeles Area. We also had some time to eat walk around Venice Beach and Hollywood.
Today, we volunteered at two different sites. All group members woke up very early so that we could attend our first service project with Woodrow Wilson High school. We talked to AVID Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students. During the forum, students asked us questions about application to the UO, Scholarship, Academic Requirements, Student Programs, Majors/minors and general questions about "what it is to be a college student".
Our second volunteer location was at Salvation Army Redshield of Los Angeles. At this site participants had the opportunity to play sports with the students (soccer and basketball) and create arts and crafts (lanyard).
We had an amazing day! Looking forward to another great day tomorrow :)
